This profile appears as part of Photographer’s Month.

If you take a look at Laura’s personal blog (dolcepics.com), pictures of her daughter easily give away that she’s a family-oriented person. And that’s exactly her focus as a wedding and portrait photographer.

“I absolutely love to spend time with a family or couple, to get to know them and ultimately create the most genuine, heartfelt portraits for my clients.”

This is Laura’s first business, but she’s still a photographer before entrepreneur. “Like most photographers, I started off as a photography enthusiast. As a result, I’ve taught a digital photography course, and also founded a local photo club, which is now in it’s third year. I’m also the administrator for the Vancouver Wedding Photographers and Second Shooters Group.”

In addition, she was voted one of 50 Essential Portrait Photographers, by VancouverMom.ca. A lovely honor, given that Hana describes herself as “a one-woman company handling everything from photography to photo editing to bookkeeping and everything in between. It’s a lot of work but I only take a limited number of clients each year to ensure they get the very best service I can offer.”

And then she heard about Wave from her husband.

Before and After Wave

Before Wave, I would rather run a marathon than do my accounting.

How did your accounting and bookkeeping look before Wave?

“Receipts in a folder separated by month. Income by memory and bank statements. I left it all until I had to prepare my taxes. I do not enjoy paperwork, accounting and preparing taxes. It actually made me feel sick just thinking about what I had to tackle and procrastinated until I couldn’t put it off any longer.”

How does your accounting and bookkeeping look now?

“I collect all my receipts by month and input them all into Wave every month. I also track all my income and sales taxes right in Wave.”

Where do you see your business in 5 years?

“I hope to develop a long-term relationship with all my clients and become their “family photographer,” so in the next 5 years, I’d love to still be photographing my current clients and meeting great new families.”

Money saved with Wave? $250

And the best part?

“It’s so easy to generate reports to get a clear picture of how my business is doing. One of the challenges of having all Mac computers is finding useful accounting software for photographers, with a good user interface that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg. So, I was excited when I was introduced to Wave and learned that not only is it web-based and accessible with any operating system, it’s free! What’s not to love?”
